Is Your Baby Organic Or in Harms Way

From the moment you bring your baby into the world you are exposing them to harmful chemicals, but you may not be fully aware of them. These harmful chemicals are in gentle soaps, shampoos, baby powders, blankets, bedding and pretty much in a household environment.

Most parents don’t take the time to read the ingredients for a bottle of baby lotion, because parents put their trust in the companies that produce these products. But, you’d be surprised to learn that these ingredients are a mixture of poison which in the long run can harm your baby. The question is how potent can these ingredients be?

Here are a few harmful ingredients your baby is exposed to:

Synthetic Perfumes

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Talc

Parabens

Why are they so harmful?

Synthetic Perfumes or fragrances contain many chemicals such as methylene chloride which is carcinogenic. Other chemicals may cause dizziness, coughing, vomiting and skin irritation.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate products like shampoos which have a foam contain SLS. It is a skin irritant and when testing new a healing ointment or cream, SLS can penetrate to the eyes, rain, liver and heart with harmful effects according to the journal of the American College of Toxicology. But what about baby products? SLS may cause exzema, skin irritations or rashes. What’s most deceiving is that SLS may be labeled as natural or organic because SLS is a detergent derived from coconut oil.

Talc is a mineral powder used in baby powder. It’s use is to keep babies skin smooth and dry but long-term can produce the effects of asbestos which is a naturally occurring mineral found in the surface of the earth. It contains strong fibres that have excellent durability, fire resistance and insulating properties. Asbestos fibres are 50 to 200 times thinner than a human hair, can float in the air for a long time, can be invisible to the naked eye and can be breathed into the lungs. Not good!

Parabens are preservatives that act like estrogen. When used for testing on rodents they produced abnormal hormonal effects, particularly in males which resulted in decreased testosterone levels. They have also been found in the breast tissue of women with breast cancer.
